Michel, Émile (1828-1909)

In 1872 he left the city the Germans had taken. The picture we hold carries that year on its face, and shows a woman with her turkeys.

Audra, Paul (1869-1948)

He left Moreau's studio alongside Matisse. Thirty years later, in Nice, he helped his old classmate find somewhere to paint.

Before 1800 the everyday was a vehicle. Then the meaning fell away, and painters showed ordinary life for itself.

Reading the Frame on an Antique Painting

The frame is half the object. It adds four to eight inches across, it decides how the picture reads on a wall, and on a small painting it can be worth as much as the canvas.
