The Penitent Magdalene

A small panel, close and intimate: Mary Magdalene caught mid-repentance, her long hair loose, her gaze turned away from the objects of vanity that anchor the theme. This is the vanitas Magdalene — the reformed sinner meditating on the emptiness of worldly things — a subject Northern painters returned to constantly through the Baroque and into the 18th century. The work is oil on wood panel, not canvas, which is typical of small devotional pictures in the Dutch tradition; panel takes fine detail and holds a smoother surface than cloth. Dutch School, first half of the 18th century, unsigned as most of these cabinet-scale devotional works are. The seller notes some losses to the paint layer, a small vertical split at the top right of the panel, and small gaps on the frame, all shown in the photos.

The Vanitas Magdalene in Northern Painting

No saint gave Northern European painters a better excuse to combine beauty and moral warning than Mary Magdalene. Her story — luxury renounced for repentance — let artists paint fine hair, bare shoulders and rich fabric while officially preaching against all of it. The vanitas apparatus around her (a skull, a mirror, a snuffed candle, jewelry set aside) turned each picture into a small meditation on mortality. By the early 18th century the formula was well over a century old and still selling, painted at cabinet scale for private houses rather than churches. A panel this size, about eleven by nine inches, was made to be lived with: hung in a bedroom or a study, close enough to read the details.
