Condition. Relined and stable on a new oval stretcher, the paint layer sound with small losses at the top center. The frame shows losses to the gesso along the inner edge and a short split in the sight moulding at the left.

Saint John the Baptist as a Child with the Lamb
Oil on canvas, oval

Unsigned. 16 x 13 inches (41 x 33 cm), the frame 21 ¼ x 18 inches (54 x 46 cm). Carved oval giltwood frame. Relined and stable, small losses at the top center, wear to the frame.

The lamb is painted with more care than the child. Its fleece is built in short white strokes over grey and its eye is drawn, while the boy's face is kept smooth and pearly.

He kneels with one arm around the lamb, a red drape falling from the shoulder across the hip, and holds upright a reed cross with its white banderole. These are the attributes of Saint John the Baptist. Behind him the ground is black, and only at the right does the picture open onto a blue distance with a mountain and a low horizon. The drape is laid in broad planes of a single red.
