Condition. Stable, with the fine age craquelure normal to an early nineteenth century canvas and a few small paint losses in the background. The frame has an open joint at the lower left corner and gilding worn to the bole in places.

Portrait of a Lady with a Jeweled Tiara
Oil on canvas

Unsigned. 9 x 6 inches (23 x 15 cm), the frame 12 x 9 inches (30.5 x 23 cm). Carved giltwood frame. Fine age craquelure and a few small losses, the frame with an open joint.

The head is turned to her left and the eyes come back to us. Short curls are brushed forward onto the forehead under a tiara of three graduated points, each set with small stones that catch the light in white flecks.

She wears a pale blue gown with a low square neck and gathered sleeves, a red shawl over one arm, and behind the neck a collar of white lace standing upright in a fan. She wears no order and no ribbon. The background is an even olive green, darker at the edges, with nothing in it at all.

Note

That upright fan of lace behind her neck is a chérusque. It was drawn up for the French imperial court in 1804 by the painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey, who borrowed it from the standing collars of the sixteenth century, and it was written into the rules of court dress. Ladies had to appear in a trained gown with a collar of lace fixed at both shoulders and rising high behind the head. It went out with the Empire and has not come back. She is wearing it here, each motif picked out in raised white over a fine grey line.
