Small Antique Portrait Paintings

About this collection

The small portrait was the format of the private room. Painted on panel or on a fine canvas, close to the eye, it was made to be looked at from a few feet away rather than across a hall. Many were court portraits, kept in cabinets and passed between families.

The selection runs from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth, with Habsburg officers in uniform, ladies in period dress, and heads after the Old Masters. Most are framed, several in their period mouldings, and all are one of a kind.
