Description

▾

A young man in the white uniform coat of the Austrian service turns his gaze to the left, an order in red and gold at his breast and a striped sash at the waist. His short, naturally curled hair and the dark stock at his throat place the portrait in the last years of the eighteenth century, when Vienna stood at the height of its courtly refinement. The painter has worked the pale coat and the flesh tones with the smooth, careful touch of the small court portraits of the Habsburg lands, made for private display in a cabinet rather than for the state room.

The painting is unsigned, as is usual for these cabinet portraits, and is presented in its period gilt frame. The paint layer is stable, with wear consistent with age and small gaps on the frame visible on close inspection.
