Portrait of a Young Officer with the Golden Fleece
Oil on canvas

Unsigned. 9 x 6 ¾ inches (23 x 17 cm), the frame 11 ½ x 9 inches (29 x 23 cm). Wide gilt cove frame. Age craquelure, the paint layer stable.

Red curls, blue eyes and a white coat buttoned to the chin. Nothing else on the coat catches the eye but a single red ribbon.

The young man is shown half length and turned to the left, his hair cut short and loosely curled over the forehead. He wears the white coat of the Austrian army with a blue collar, a black stock high around the neck and a small lace jabot below it. The ribbon hangs from a buttonhole on his chest and carries the badge of the Golden Fleece, and a gold sash shows at the waist against a dark green ground.

Note

Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, founded the Order of the Golden Fleece at Bruges in 1430, on the day of his wedding. Its badge was a golden ram hanging from flints and steels striking sparks, and its knights were kept to a very small number. When Burgundy passed to the Habsburgs by marriage the order passed with it, and after the Spanish branch of the family died out in 1700 it split in two, one order in Madrid and one in Vienna. On this plain white coat the ram hangs from a red ribbon, painted in a few touches of red and gold.
