Huntsman and Four Hounds at the Edge of a Wood
Oil on wood panel

Signed and dated lower right Tristan Lacroix 1891. 12 ½ x 16 inches (32 x 41 cm). Unframed. Sound panel, fine craquelure, small losses along the edges.

The huntsman bends with his back half turned and both hands busy at the collars. Four black, white and tan hounds crowd around his boots, one pushing between his legs, while he reaches down to hold them back at the edge of the wood.

His coat is scarlet with gold braid at the collar and cuffs, worn with a dark velvet cap banded in gold, blue breeches and laced leather gaiters. Behind him an oak still carries its russet leaves over a pale birch trunk and dry bracken. A rough rail fence closes the meadow at the right, and far off a few roofs sit under a grey sky.

Note

The brass loop over his shoulder is the trompe de chasse, the horn of French venery, coiled wide enough to be worn across the body and sounded from the saddle. In the forest its calls told the whole hunt where the hounds had gone. When the coiled hunting horn crossed from France to England by the end of the seventeenth century, the English named it the French horn, and the name stayed with it when it moved into the orchestra. Here it is still a hunting horn, slung on his back, its mouthpiece nowhere near his lips.
