Frame. Wide gilt frame with a rope twist edge, an acanthus and floret frieze and projecting corner fleurons, the gilding rubbed on the high points

Condition. Unlined canvas, the paint layer stable throughout. The frame has lost ornament at both upper corners down to the gesso, with a knock to the top edge and crazing across the gilding; the lower corners are sound.

Signed lower right Desvarreux. 21 x 25 inches (53 x 64 cm), the frame 30 x 34 inches (76 x 86 cm). Wide gilt frame with acanthus corners. Unlined and stable, losses to the frame at both upper corners.

The light is what strikes first. Full sun on the track, and every animal drags a mauve shadow across the grass behind it.

Two oxen under a single head yoke come forward on a diagonal, one russet and one pale, and the driver in a straw hat sits on the shafts of an empty two-wheeled cart behind them. A shepherdess in white stands off in the field with her staff while the sheep graze around her. The ground in front of her is broken by heather in rose, lilac and white, and this is where the paint is thickest, built up in raised touches that take the light from the side. Behind, a hamlet with whitewashed walls sits among the trees, and to the left the land drops into a bluish valley.
