Barbizon School Paintings

About this collection

The Barbizon School gathers the French painters who, from the 1830s onward, left the studio to paint the forest of Fontainebleau, the plains and the farm life around the village of Barbizon, opening the way to Impressionism.

The paintings presented here are original 19th-century oils on canvas and on wood panel, many of them signed by listed painters and presented in period gilded frames. Haystacks, shepherds, rivers and heather paths are the subjects that made this school the heart of French landscape painting. From the Barbizon school landscape oil on canvas to the Barbizon school forest and river landscape, this collection follows the forest of Fontainebleau in its earthy, muted palette, the river bank at dusk, the haystack in the plain and the shepherd with his flock.
