Description
▾A single tree in white blossom fills the left of the canvas, laid on thick and worked wet into wet, while the grey sky behind it is scraped almost bare. The whole weight of the paint is in the flowering branches.
Oil on canvas, unlined, 10 x 16 inches (25 x 41 cm), 12 x 18 inches (30 x 46 cm) framed. Signed P. Peraire lower left. French, late nineteenth century, in a carved and gilded swept frame.
A farm sits behind the tree, its white wall catching the only other light in the picture, a tiled roof above it and a long thatched barn to the right. A path of pale earth runs up towards it, and a cockerel and six hens feed along the grass in the right foreground beside a heap of loose straw laid on as thickly as the blossom. Dark conifers close the view on the right. The handling changes with the subject. The blossom is built in loaded touches that stand off the canvas, the grass is dragged in short strokes of acid green, and the sky is thin enough that the weave shows through.

Sold to an American, in Paris The label on the back is that of the Paris American Art Company, 2 rue Bonaparte, opposite the École des Beaux-Arts. The name says who the customers were. They sold French pictures to Americans in Paris and shipped them home, and the stock number 8057 is written on the label and again in chalk on the stretcher. This canvas has probably crossed the Atlantic once already. |
The canvas has never been relined and sits on its original keyed stretcher, with the standard French canvas size still legible in chalk beside the label.
