Paul Emmanuel Peraire
1829 to 1893
Paul Emmanuel Peraire came to painting at thirty, after leaving the Paris Bourse where his family had worked for three generations. He made his Salon debut at thirty-six and showed there every year until his death, and carried the manner of Corot and Daubigny, the Barbizon painters, through the last decades of the century.

The Peraire Touch
As he matured, the touch thickened.
His early Salon canvases were large and finished in the polished manner juries expected. Later the palette deepened, the formats shrank, and the paint went on broad and wet, in the manner of Daubigny. The subjects are the Seine, the Oise and the Marne, and the country around Montmartre before the city swallowed it.
Who Trained Peraire
He came to painting late and trained under two masters, Eugène Isabey, the Romantic painter of coasts and harbours, and Évariste Vital Luminais.

The Life of Paul Emmanuel Peraire, Place by Place
Born in Bordeaux into a family of stockbrokers, he left finance at thirty and spent his whole painting life on the slopes of Montmartre.
He is born here in 1829, into a family of stockbrokers.
He works at the Paris Bourse until 1859, then turns painter at thirty. From his studio at 46 rue Lepic in Montmartre he shows at the Salon every year from 1866 to 1892.

The affair of the coulissiers.
In 1859 he was caught up in the affair of the coulissiers, the unofficial brokers who traded outside the regulated Paris Bourse and were prosecuted that year. He left finance entirely and began again, at thirty, as a painter.
