Oil on wood panel

Signed Eug. Forest and dated, with a place name, lower left. 5 x 9 inches (13 x 23 cm), the frame 10 x 14 inches (25 x 36 cm). Gilt cove frame. Stable, light surface dirt.

No one walks the track. It runs in from the lower left between ricks thatched to a point and weathered to grey, and at the right a heap of fresh gold hay lies still loose and uncovered beside a mound of russet brown, the new harvest set down beside the old.

Further back a tall conical stack, yellow from top to foot, stands against a line of dark trees. The sky is worked thin and pale, so the whole panel is lit by the hay rather than by the sun.

Note

Monet called his famous series Meules, and the Art Institute of Chicago now titles its canvases Stacks of Wheat rather than Haystacks. The French word is the precise one. A gerbe is a sheaf, cut, bound and stood on the stubble to dry, while a meule is the large stack built later from those dried sheaves, thatched over against the rain and left standing until threshing. The pointed, thatched ricks on this panel are meules, the end of the harvest rather than the middle of it.
