Three ricks and no shadow anywhere. The light is the flat even light of an overcast day, and what holds the picture together is the difference between old hay and new, grey and brown against one passage of gold.

Oil on wood panel, 5 x 9 inches (13 x 23 cm), 10 x 14 inches (25 x 36 cm) framed. Signed and dated 1882 lower left. French, in a gilded carved frame.

A track runs in from the lower left between stacked ricks, weathered grey and thatched to a point, with a fresh gold heap at the right still loose and uncovered. A conical stack stands further back against a line of dark trees, and the sky above is worked thin and pale over the panel.

Stacks, not sheaves
English has one word where French has two. These are meules, the large stacks built at the farm from sheaves already carried in from the field, thatched over and left standing until threshing. The small cones drying on the stubble are gerbes, and they are a different thing entirely. What is painted here is the end of the harvest, not the middle of it.

The frame is a carved gilded moulding with a wide cove and a stepped inner edge.

The panel is stable and flat, with small gaps to the gilding at the frame joints.
