Eugène Forest
1808 to 1891
Eugène Forest drew political satire on the lithographic stone beside Daumier and Grandville, in the papers of the July Monarchy, and then set the stone down. From 1847 he showed quiet landscapes and studies of birds at the Paris Salon. He was born the same year as Daumier and outlived him by twelve years.

Five inches by nine, signed and dated 1882.
He was in his seventies when he signed and dated this small panel, adding the name of the place at the lower left. The picture is built on one line, a track that runs in between the weathered ricks toward the dark trees at the back.
Who Trained Forest
He is recorded as a pupil of the Romantic painter Camille Roqueplan. On the lithographic stone he followed Henri Monnier and above all Grandville, whose designs he often drew.

The Life of Eugène Forest, Place by Place
He made his first career drawing caricature for the satirical press, and his second painting fields and birds.
He is born here on 24 October 1808.
He draws for La Silhouette, La Caricature and Le Charivari, then shows landscapes and studies of birds at the Salon from 1847 to 1866.
He dies here on 28 December 1891, aged eighty-three.

Many of his lithographs name Grandville as the author of the design and Forest as the man who drew it on the stone. Les Dégommés, in the RISD Museum, is one of them.
