Frame. Gilt frame with moulded acanthus and berry ornament over red bole and a beaded sight fillet, worn on the high points, losses at a corner

Condition. Good original condition, the canvas unlined on its stretcher. The frame has wear to the gilding on the high points, a loss to the composition at the upper left corner, scattered chips along the edges, a break in the beaded fillet and an open joint at a corner.

Signed lower left E. Michel, dated 72. 18 x 25 inches (46 x 64 cm), the frame 33 x 36 inches (84 x 91 cm). Gilt frame with acanthus and berry ornament. Good original condition, unlined, wear and losses to the frame.

A girl in a blue skirt and a pink kerchief stands in the stubble with a distaff in her hand, small against the wood, and her turkeys crowd around her feet. White and bronze birds are scattered across the shorn field, some standing, most settled in the warm grass, each built with a few loaded strokes.

Two great oaks stand side by side behind her, one still in full summer green, the other already turned to rust and bronze. The wood runs back on the right, and on the left the land opens out to a low horizon under high white cloud. The stubble is scratched in with the tip of the brush over a warm ground, while the foliage carries more body, laid in small dabs that leave the sky showing between the leaves.

Good original condition, the canvas unlined on its stretcher. The frame has wear to the gilding on the high points, a loss to the composition at the upper left corner, scattered chips along the edges, a break in the beaded fillet and an open joint at a corner.
