The dress is the only lit thing in the picture. Pink silk catching the light from the left, and everything around it, the wall, the foliage, the servant, goes to olive and brown.

Oil on canvas, unlined, 13 x 9 inches (33 x 23 cm), 17 x 14 inches (43 x 36 cm) framed. Signed Lassalle lower right. French, circa 1830 to 1850, in a carved and gilded Rococo style frame.

A young woman in a wide pink silk gown stands in a garden, reaching to take a rose from a bush at the left, another rose held in her right hand against the skirt. A liveried servant in a red coat and a plumed turban stands behind her at the right holding a basket of cut flowers. A small spaniel runs at her feet. Behind them a low stone wall closes the garden, with trees and a fountain beyond, and a large carved urn stands at the left edge.

The silk is the whole exercise. It is built in three values of rose over a grey underlayer, the highlights dragged along the folds with a dry brush and left, while the face and hands are worked smooth and small. The rest of the canvas is painted broadly, in browns and olive greens that exist to make the pink carry.

The dress, the garden and the liveried attendant belong to the middle of the eighteenth century, and the canvas was painted a hundred years later. The July Monarchy bought this kind of picture in quantity. It was the Ancien Régime replayed as costume, sold to a bourgeoisie that had not lived it, and painters like Lassalle made a career of it.

The canvas is unlined on its keyed stretcher and the surface is stable under a fine overall craquelure. The gilded frame has small losses to the openwork, and a stencilled mark remains on the reverse of the canvas.
