Fire by the Coast
Oil on canvas

Unsigned. 12 ½ x 21 inches (32 x 53.5 cm), the frame 13 x 21 ½ inches (33 x 54.5 cm). Narrow gilt strip frame. Small paint losses and a fine craquelure in the sky.

The fire takes the whole left half of the canvas. Flames run along the waterfront in reds and oranges, and the smoke climbs in a broad pink and gold column into the sky. Ships lie at anchor in a line across the middle, their masts and rigging dark against the glare.

At the right a single-masted boat crowded with small figures rides close to the viewer, flags at its stern and its yard set across the mast. Beyond it the water opens pale toward a far headland. The sky clears from smoke to a cool grey blue at the top. The handling is quick throughout, figures and rigging set down in single touches with no attempt at finish.
