Description

This oil study depicts a fire raging along a coastline at dusk. Flames and a column of orange smoke rise on the left, above a waterfront where a church tower stands out in silhouette against the blaze. Ships lie at anchor across the middle of the composition, their masts and rigging cutting dark lines against the light, and a large galley with a canopied stern and rows of oarsmen occupies the right foreground. The sky moves from cool grey blue on the left to a pale luminous gold on the right, where the water opens toward a distant headland. Small boats crowded with figures pull away from the burning shore.

The handling is rapid and gestural, laid in with confidence and with no attempt at finish. Studies of this kind were an essential part of the nineteenth century painter's working method, used to test a lighting effect and fix a composition before committing to a large canvas, and they are valued today for exactly the freedom that the finished salon picture tends to lose. The panel carries a fine craquelure across the sky and some loss of pictorial layer, visible in the photographs. The work is unsigned and is presented in a narrow gilt strip frame.
