Victor Philippe Philipsen was a French painter and draughtsman, born in La Rochelle and died in Lyon, a pupil of Édouard Pinel who painted seascapes, harbours and coastal views, the Italian coast among them.

Condition. Two fine horizontal cracks follow the grain of the panel at the left of the sky, a short one at the top corner and a longer one just above the town on the far shore, with small losses along them where the bare wood shows. A few small dark specks sit on the surface of the sky. The gilding of the frame is rubbed through to red bole along its mouldings.

Signed lower right V. Philipsen. 7 x 13 ½ inches (18 x 34 cm), the frame 10 ½ x 17 inches (27 x 43 cm). Moulded gilt frame. Two fine cracks along the grain at the upper left, with small losses.

The volcano has two peaks, and only one of them smokes. Across a turquoise bay Vesuvius sends a thin grey plume into a pale sky while the lower ridge beside it stays clear, and on the far left shore a white town climbs a hill to a building at its summit.

The water is still. In the foreground a dark shore of flat stones runs out to a low rock pierced by an arch. Out on the bay a long boat loaded with red and yellow tows a small tender on a line, with sailing boats leaning in the distance and a few gulls picked out in single strokes of the brush. Each of the three fishermen aboard, no taller than a grain of rice, wears a cap made of a single touch of red.

Note

For three centuries a thread of smoke above Vesuvius was simply part of the view from Naples, and painters put it in as surely as the bay. Then in March 1944, in the middle of the war, the volcano erupted, burying villages on its slopes and wrecking dozens of American bombers parked on an airfield below. When it fell quiet, the plume did not come back. Hardly anyone alive remembers it. On this panel it still rises.
