Condition. Good condition. The canvas is stable, with old restorations visible in the photographs. The reverse carries the marks of an earlier lining. Small losses to the gilding of the frame at the corners and along the lower rail.

Signed and dated 1839 lower right. 18 x 15 inches (46 x 38 cm), the frame 22 x 18 inches (56 x 46 cm). Period gilt frame with carved corner ornaments. Old restorations, small losses to the gilding.

The gun is doing nothing. Its stock rests on the ground against his leg and the barrel rises to his right hand, while he leans back on a mossy rock with his other hand on his hip and a pair of white gloves held in it.

He wears a dark frock coat, a pale grey waistcoat buttoned high, fawn trousers and a black stock at the throat, and his top hat sits on the rock behind him. A white and liver pointing dog sits at his feet on the right and looks off out of the picture. Behind them the ground falls away to a plain with a glint of water, under a sky worked in heavy grey with one break of blue.
