Monogrammed E.L.G and dated 1857 lower right. 22 x 18 inches (56 x 45.5 cm), the frame 27 x 23 inches (68.5 x 58.5 cm). Gilt oval frame. Old restorations and a small paint loss at the lower right.

The only color in the picture is in her hair. A spray of blue flowers is pinned at the side of her head, against dark hair parted in the center and drawn down over the ears, and the dress, the ground and the shadows around her are all black and brown.

She faces us almost straight on, a white lace collar at her neck. The face is modeled in warm flesh tones without flattery, the eyes level and the mouth closed. On the back the canvas carries the stamp of Deforge, a Paris supplier of artists' colors on the boulevard Montmartre.
