Description

▾

A mid-nineteenth-century French portrait of quiet presence. The sitter faces us in a dark dress with a white lace collar, her hair parted and dressed with a spray of blue flowers, the single note of colour against a deep brown ground. The restrained palette and the direct, unidealised gaze are characteristic of French portraiture of the 1850s, painted in the years when Realism was reshaping the genre.

The work is monogrammed ELG and dated 1856 at the right, and is presented in its period gilded oval frame with a laurel-pattern border, an elegant format much favoured for portraits under the Second Empire. The condition is honestly stated. There are old restorations and a small paint loss in the lower right corner, visible in the detailed photographs, which form part of the description.
