Description
▾Portrait of a Woman with Pearl Necklace and Rose
A seated woman looks directly at the viewer, her powdered hair arranged in a soft updo with a small ornament. She wears a pearl necklace over a white lace corsage beneath a blue-grey silk robe decorated with floral patterns. In her left hand, she holds a pink rose. The red upholstered chair is partly visible at her side. The background is a warm brown tone that keeps the focus on the figure, her clothing, and the light falling across the fabric.
French Rococo Portraiture in the Mid-18th Century
During the reign of Louis XV, portrait painting in France shifted from the monumental formality of the Baroque period toward softer, more intimate compositions. Rococo portraiture favored light palettes, flowing fabrics, and natural poses that revealed something of the sitter's personality. Louis Tocqué, who became a member of the Académie royale in 1734, was among the leading portraitists of this generation, painting members of the royal court including Louis XV and Marie Leszczyńska. His circle of followers and studio assistants carried forward his approach to fabric rendering, soft lighting, and the use of accessories like flowers or jewelry to define social standing.
