Vertical Antique Paintings

About this collection

Vertical antique paintings are taller than they are wide, the shape European painters gave to a standing figure, a face, a saint or a bouquet.

Many of them are portraits. The others are religious scenes, still lifes, flowers and animals, painted between the 17th and the 19th century, some of them signed.

Vertical antique paintings for sale at GalerieClub

Height gives a painting a different job from width. The vertical antique paintings in this collection were painted more than a century ago, in oil on canvas and on panel with the odd watercolour, and they range from small cabinet pictures to canvases in large period frames.

  • Saints, the Madonna and Child and the penitent Magdalene are usually shown standing or in half length, and a vertical religious painting follows the figure. Some are period copies after the Old Masters, and their titles say so.

  • A bouquet grows upward from its vase, and tall flower paintings grow with it, in oil on canvas, on panel and now and then in watercolour.

  • A tall picture fills the walls a wide one cannot use, between two windows, beside a door or along a staircase. Measure the wall rather than the canvas, since a period frame adds width on every side.
