Height gives a painting a different job from width. The vertical antique paintings in this collection were painted more than a century ago, in oil on canvas and on panel with the odd watercolour, and they range from small cabinet pictures to canvases in large period frames.
-
Saints, the Madonna and Child and the penitent Magdalene are usually shown standing or in half length, and a vertical religious painting follows the figure. Some are period copies after the Old Masters, and their titles say so.
-
A bouquet grows upward from its vase, and tall flower paintings grow with it, in oil on canvas, on panel and now and then in watercolour.
-
A tall picture fills the walls a wide one cannot use, between two windows, beside a door or along a staircase. Measure the wall rather than the canvas, since a period frame adds width on every side.
