Max Moreau (1902-1992)

Listed artist

Belgian painter born in Soignies, taught by his father Henri Moreau and by copying the old masters in the Brussels museum. A first journey to Tunisia in 1929 shaped his work. After the war he became an international portraitist, and he ended his life in Granada, where a house museum keeps his bequest.

Condition. Good original condition. Original unlined canvas on its purpose made oval stretcher, built from jointed segments with a cross brace, sound throughout. An open but stable craquelure follows the thickly painted passages of the gown, the thin ground being free of it.

Oil on canvas, oval

Signed and dated lower right Max Moreau 1925, in red. 26 x 20 inches (66 x 51 cm). Unframed. Good original condition, unlined, a stable craquelure in the thick paint of the gown.

She is smiling. The mouth turns up at one corner and the eyes go with it.

She is turned three quarters to the right against a warm grey ground, her hair waved and cut short at the jaw, a single strand of small pearls at the throat, each pearl with its own point of light. The pink gown with its pale grey front is laid in broad wet strokes with the brush marks left standing, while the face is worked smooth and close. Behind her right shoulder a chair back is suggested in two broad passages, and nothing else.

Note

French color merchants sold stretchers and canvases in fixed numbered sizes, and each number came in three shapes, F for figure, P for paysage, the landscape, and M for marine, each a little narrower than the last. A portrait would normally be painted on an F. The oval stretcher behind this young woman is stamped 15 P, the landscape shape, 65 by 50 centimeters, and her portrait fills it to the edge.
