Impressionist Style Paintings

About this collection

Impressionist style paintings carry the lessons of Impressionism beyond the historical group, the light of the open air and the quick, broken touch of the 1870s, taken up by painters from the late 19th century into the 20th.

The movement ended, the manner did not. These original oil paintings were made by painters who kept working outdoors, in gardens, fields and along the coast, many of them signed. To see where the manner began, read about Impressionism.

Impressionist style paintings for sale at GalerieClub

Fewer than a hundred painters ever showed at the Impressionist exhibitions, held in Paris between 1874 and 1886. Hundreds more learned from them. An original Impressionist style oil painting in this collection comes from that wider circle, painters who adopted the light and the brushwork of the movement without belonging to its group.

  • The easel left the studio. Painters in the Impressionist manner worked outdoors, directly in front of the motif, to catch a light that changed by the hour, and a plein air oil painting keeps the speed of that session, a sky laid in quickly and shadows painted in colour rather than in grey. Fields, gardens and the edges of the sea were their natural subjects, and an Impressionist style landscape is often the freshest picture in a room.

  • Up close, nothing is blended. Broken brushwork sets small separate touches of colour side by side, and the eye mixes them from a few steps away, so that a painterly style painting looks rough at arm's length and luminous across a room. Some painters of the 20th century pushed the touch further, toward a Post-Impressionist style with firmer shapes and bolder colour.

  • Leisure became a subject. Women knitting on a park bench, figures picking fruit in a summer garden and a young sitter painted in soft daylight belong to the Impressionist taste for everyday moments outdoors, and harbours, lagoons and rocky coasts at sunset carry the same light onto the water.

  • Many of these painters signed in a lower corner, and a signature places the work in its painter's career. Most worked on canvas, some on wood panel or board, which was light to carry outdoors, and many of these works keep their gilt frames.
