Signed and titled on the reverse. 10 ½ x 16 inches (27 x 41 cm), the frame 13 ¾ x 19 ¼ inches (35 x 49 cm). Carved gilt frame. Good original condition, the impasto unflattened.

The rock stands off the cardboard in ridges of violet paint. It rises from the waterline at the right almost to the top of the picture, built up in wide loaded strokes of violet, mauve and yellow that were never blended back.

The sky is the opposite, small separate touches of cream, pale yellow and blue, with two streaks of pink low on the left. Between the two the sea is dragged flat in horizontal strokes of green and turquoise. Rounded boulders sit at the waterline, and the far shore is a single dark blue band along the horizon.

Note

The massif the painter names on the reverse is volcanic rock, red in full daylight, and that is what sets this stretch of the French Mediterranean apart from the pale limestone coasts on either side of it. Under a low sun it turns violet. That is the color on the cardboard here, from the boulders at the waterline to the wall of rock on the right.
