There is no sun in this sunset. The light comes from behind the headland on the left, and it reaches the picture only as a pale yellow that fills the whole upper half of the cardboard.

Oil on cardboard, 10 1/2 x 16 inches (27 x 41 cm), 13 3/4 x 19 1/4 inches (35 x 49 cm) framed. Signed and titled by the painter on the reverse. French, early twentieth century. Carved gilt frame.

The sky is laid in small separate touches of cream, pale blue and yellow, with two streaks of pink low on the left. The rock on the right is painted the opposite way, in wide loaded strokes left exactly as they came off the brush. Between the two the sea is dragged flat and horizontal, a hard green set against the dark blue line of the far shore. The rock runs off the top edge.

A red coast, not a white one

The massif the painter names on the reverse is volcanic rock, red in full daylight, and that is what sets this stretch of the French Mediterranean apart from the pale limestone coasts on either side of it. Under a low sun it turns violet. That is the colour on the cardboard here, from the boulders at the waterline to the wall of rock on the right.

Good original condition. The impasto on the rock stands high enough to cast its own small shadows, and none of it has been flattened by a later pressing.

Condition

Good original condition. The impasto is unflattened throughout, with no visible loss and no sign of pressing. Light surface dirt and a slightly yellowed varnish, normal to an early twentieth century oil on cardboard.
