Description
▾The sails are the only thick paint in the picture. Loaded orange, rose and cream, laid on with the knife and standing off the board, while the water and the sky are scraped thin.
Oil on board, 18 x 21 inches (46 x 53 cm), 22 x 25 inches (56 x 64 cm) framed. Signed Forest lower right. French, early twentieth century, in a carved giltwood frame.
Three lateen sails rise across the right of the picture, a fourth further off, the boats beneath them crowded with small dark figures in blue and red. The lagoon runs flat and green blue to a low quay in the middle distance, with a campanile and a long pale facade drawn in three or four strokes of pink and white. A gondola crosses the lower right corner. The whole surface is worked with the knife, the paint dragged in flat planes and left with its edges showing.
|
Sails that were already disappearing The lateen rigged fishing boats of the lagoon carried tan and rose sails, dyed with earth pigments and oxide, and each family painted its own device on them. Motors replaced them within a generation. A painter working in Venice in these years was not painting the monuments, which is why the palace behind is three strokes of pink and the sails carry all the paint in the picture. |
The board is sound and the paint layer stable throughout, the knife work standing off the surface as it was left.
