Fruit Picking in a Summer Garden, Signed Oil on Canvas by Sinicki, 20th Century French School, Gilt Frame

The paint stands off the canvas like plaster. Every leaf, every flower and every fold of the dresses is laid on thickly with a knife, so that the whole garden catches the light in ridges and small peaks.

Oil on canvas, 29 x 23 inches (73.5 x 58.5 cm), 34 x 29 inches (86.5 x 73.5 cm) framed, signed "R. Sinicki" lower right, 20th century, French school, in a gilt frame.

Four figures work in a summer orchard. At the centre a girl in a red dress reaches up into a young fruit tree above a basket of red fruit, while two women in pale blue bend together at the right and a girl in white with a straw hat walks away through the long grass at the left. Behind them a white picket fence runs along a hedge of red and yellow flowers, with a red roof just showing above it, under a pale blue sky scattered with white.

The painting is in good condition, its thick impasto stable across the whole surface. On the reverse the tacking edges of the canvas are frayed, without effect on the painted face.

The basket at the foot of the tree is almost full, and the girl in red is still reaching for more.
