Antique 19th Century Paintings

About this collection

Antique 19th century oil paintings belong to the century in which European painters left the studio for the open air, from the Barbizon landscape and the Realist countryside to Impressionism and the finished pictures of the Salon.

The easel went outdoors. Forest and river landscapes, harvest fields and flocks, hunting subjects and animal paintings came back from it, while portraits and religious compositions kept to the studio. Most are oils on canvas or panel. Many are signed, some dated in the painter's own hand. To follow the move into the open air, read about the Barbizon School and Impressionism.

19th century paintings for sale at GalerieClub

Two paths ran side by side for most of the century. Landscape painters worked outdoors, while the official exhibitions in Paris kept their taste for the carefully finished picture. The 19th century oil paintings in this collection belong to that double tradition, original 1800s works, most of them French, and every nineteenth century oil painting here is described from the canvas itself.

  • Signatures became the rule. Painters of the century signed in a lower corner, and a signed 19th century French oil painting can usually be placed in its painter's career, especially when a date or a dedication sits beside the name. Some are signed and dated on wood panel, many keep their gilt frames, and unsigned ones are described by school and decade, as our guide to reading an attribution explains.

  • One exhibition decided careers. The Paris Salon, the great official exhibition, showed thousands of works each year and rewarded the smooth, finished academic style taught in the schools. A French Salon painting of the 19th century is recognised by that finish, a careful surface and a clear subject, and much of the century's portraiture and genre painting followed it even outside the exhibition halls.

  • Landscape rose to the top of the century, and its pastoral scenes with sheep and oxen, heather moors and river banks gather in our collection of Barbizon School paintings. Studio subjects held their place too, genre scenes of daily life, religious scenes on canvas, portraits of young men in high stocks and women in pearls, and officers in uniform, all painted with a new attention to the real.
