About the Artist

James Desvarreux-Larpenteur (1847-1937) was born in France and trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris before settling in Baltimore, Maryland, where he became a recognized figure in the American art scene. He exhibited in both France and the United States, and his landscapes show the influence of the Barbizon school and early Impressionism. His work is held in several American collections. This painting comes from the sale of the painter's workshop, which gives it a direct link to the artist's studio practice.
