A painting after an Old Master is a period copy, a hand-painted canvas made by a trained professional of a later generation, following a composition by a named master he could study but never own.

Our works after the Old Masters span the Italian, Flemish and French schools, from copies painted in the master's own century to Salon copies of the nineteenth, several of them dated by the copyist's own hand. From the period copy after an Old Master to the antique copy of a famous painting, this collection continues a tradition as old as the masters themselves. Collectors will find the 17th century copy painted in the master's own age and the 19th century Salon copy signed or dated by the copyist, each stated plainly as After in the cautious terms of the trade.
