Condition. Structurally sound. The panel is made of two boards and the horizontal joint is visible at the upper right, an old and stable movement. There are small paint losses, shown in the photographs. The reverse carries an old cradle. The frame shows gaps and general wear.

The Fire of Sodom
Oil on oak panel

Unsigned. 20 x 25 ½ inches (51 x 65 cm), the frame 27 x 32 ½ inches (69 x 83 cm). Deep molded frame in dark wood. Structurally sound, with an old and stable joint between the two boards.

The left third of the panel is in shadow and the rest is on fire. Under a rock hung with a green drapery and the trunk of a dark tree, Lot sits with one daughter in his arms while the other leans in behind him holding a jug, the group worked in red, white and deep green. On the right the city burns down its hillside, and the smoke rising from it takes the whole upper half of the sky and turns it pink.

The buildings are drawn with a fine brush, arcades, towers and a bridge legible at a few millimeters, and the smoke is scumbled over them so that the architecture reads through it. On the empty road between the two halves a single dark figure stands alone.

Note

The burning city was a specialty in Antwerp around 1600, painted over and over by a handful of workshops that had made a business of night, smoke and flame. Sodom, Troy and the sack of Rome were the usual subjects, and the point was the light. A painter who could make fire read through smoke at that scale had a trade the landscape men did not. Two specialties meet on this panel, the fire behind and the figure group in front.
