Signed and dated lower center Dilley 96, titled on the reverse. 31 ½ x 15 ¾ inches (80 x 40 cm), the frame 38 x 22 inches (96.5 x 56 cm). Hand painted frame. Good condition, a few small chips to the frame.

The trees are blue. Not their leaves but their trunks, two ribbons of pure ultramarine climbing the canvas on either side of the piper.

A slender nude figure with long dark hair stands by a lake playing a golden double pipe, a long garland of pink flowers hanging from the shoulders, and the lower body dissolves into dark blue and green strokes that cross like legs. Behind the water a line of green trees closes the view under a pale sky. At the right a clump of pink hydrangeas grows by the path, and at the left edge a peacock turns its head, its tail spread in blue eyes.

Note

The Bois de Boulogne was a royal hunting forest until Napoleon III handed it to the city of Paris in 1852 and had it remodeled as a park, with lakes, winding paths and waterfalls. Inside it lies Bagatelle, a small château built in 1777 in about two months to win a wager between the Comte d'Artois and the queen. The city later bought the estate, and peacocks still wander freely across its lawns and among its roses. Dilley named this canvas after the Bois and set a peacock at its left edge, its tail brushing the blue trunk of a tree.
