Ramon Dilley
1932 to 2013
Ramon Dilley was born Gómez Ramón y Romero in Madrid in 1932, and his family fled the Spanish Civil War to Royan in 1936. Largely self-taught, he took the name Dilley in the 1960s on the advice of the auctioneer Maurice Rheims, and painted the seaside elegance of Deauville in long, slender figures.

Piper with a Peacock, 1996Nothing in this garden casts a shadow. The figure, the trees and the peacock stand on the path without weight, and the only gold in the picture is kept for the pipe and a thin line of shore across the lake, so that the eye goes from one to the other and back.$4,300See the painting
Elstir en Famille, 1973Nobody in the group looks at anyone else. The four figures stand shoulder to shoulder, each turned a different way, and only the yellow of the child's coat and the man's boater ties them together across the canvas.$2,700See the painting
A Sketch on the Back
The title twice, and a little drawing of the piper.
On the back of this canvas a handwritten note gives the title with a quick sketch of the figure, pinned above the same title written again in capitals.
