Henri Stenn (1903-1993)

Listed artist

Henri Stenn was the son of the Flemish painter Charles Verbrugghe, who taught him and whose subjects and handling he kept. He signed under a pseudonym rather than the family name, and painted parks, riverbanks and tree-lined roads in and around Paris through the second half of the twentieth century.

Condition. Good original condition. The panel is sound and the paint surface intact. The frame is worn, with losses to the whitewash and small gaps at the mitres, both shown in the photographs.

Oil on Isorel panel

Signed lower left Henri Stenn. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm), the frame 16 x 18 inches (41 x 46 cm). Carved and whitewashed frame. Good original condition, the frame worn.

An avenue runs straight into the depth of the panel. The trunks rise bare for most of their height before the foliage closes over the top of the picture, in a teal that the eye first takes for green.

On either side the ground falls away into open fields of pale yellow and green, and a low horizon shows through the trunks at left and right. A small group walks away down the path, one figure touched with red, each reduced to a few strokes. The foliage is built in short dabs of a loaded brush and the path in long horizontal strokes that carry the eye to the far end.
