Description
▾The water holds more colour than the land above it.
Oil on canvas, 15 x 11 inches (38 x 28 cm), 19 x 23 inches (48 x 58 cm) framed. Signed lower right and dated. Titled Lake District on the reverse in the painter's hand. French, 1964. Gilded frame with a grey linen mount.
An oval composition. A lake fills the lower half and takes the reflection of everything above it, broken into vertical strokes of rose, violet, pale blue and green that never resolve into a single shape. Above the far bank, wooded slopes in deep green and blue, then bare hills in pink and ochre, then a sky of white and turquoise laid on thick. The paint is worked with a knife throughout, ridged and stiff, catching light across the whole surface.

A French painter in Cumbria
The title written on the back is the painter's own, and it names a place she travelled to. The Lake District is in the north west of England, four hundred miles from Paris, and it had been a destination for landscape painters since Turner went there. What a French painter of 1964 brought to it was a palette that owes nothing to English watercolour, all rose and turquoise laid on with a knife. The subject is English. The handling is not.

The painting is in good original condition, the impasto unflattened across the whole surface. The frame is a later one, fitted in the south of France, with its maker's label still on the back.
