She has her back to the race.

Oil on canvas, 16 x 10 1/2 inches (41 x 27 cm), 18 x 12 3/4 inches (46 x 32 cm) framed. Signed lower right. French, 1960s. Gilded frame with a dark red inner slip.

A woman stands at the rail in the lower half of the canvas, seen from behind, bare shoulders above an orange dress and a white wrap fallen to the elbows, a hat built out of squares of red, white and yellow. Above and behind her a horse crosses at full stretch with a jockey in yellow folded over its neck. The paint is laid on thick with a knife over the whole surface, and the grey of the course is worked as heavily as the figures. Nothing is outlined.

A dealer's letter from June 1966, on the back
Taped to the reverse is a letter on the headed paper of the Galerie d'Art G. and B. Charrier, 24 rue Dusevel in Amiens, dated June 1966 and addressed to a collector who already owned a painting by Labonne. In it the dealer reports that two canvases by the painter shown in a group exhibition in New York had been acquired, and that the American gallery had offered Labonne an exclusive contract for the United States. The letter is reproduced here in full and is sold with the picture. It is a dealer's own account of his artist, written at the time, and we pass it on as that.

The paint stands proud of the canvas across the whole surface and has not been flattened. The gilded frame has small gaps in the moulding.

Private collection, France. A dealer's letter dated June 1966 is attached to the reverse and sold with the painting.
