Bouquet of Violets in a Blue Vase, Signed Oil on Canvas, Dated 1931, Framed

A loose bouquet of violets and small pink and white blooms fills a round blue ceramic pot set on a dark surface, the flowers massed in soft violet, mauve and green against a deep red-brown ground. The warm, almost burgundy background pushes the cool flowers forward and gives the small canvas a grave, intimate mood. The paint is worked in thick, broken strokes, the petals built up wet into wet in the manner of the early twentieth century.

The painting is signed and dated 1931, and presented in a carved frame. The canvas is in good condition, its rich dark ground well preserved.
