Bouquet of Violets in a Blue Vase
Oil on canvas

Signed and dated upper right Carlo Cherubini 1931. 18 x 24 inches (45.5 x 61 cm), the frame 26 ¾ x 32 ½ inches (68 x 82.5 cm). Carved Montparnasse-style frame with a cream slip, a few very small paint losses.

The violets fill the blue pot and spill over its rim, mauve and pale lilac with touches of yellow and white at their centers.

Everything else is red-brown. The ground is brushed in loose diagonal strokes that never settle into a wall or a drape, and the table is no more than a darker band along the bottom of the canvas, with a few fallen petals lying on it at the left. The blue of the pot is the coolest color in the picture, laid in short curved strokes that follow its round body. On the back the canvas is unlined on its keyed stretcher.
