Marie Astoin (1923-2011)

Listed artist

Marie Astoin (1923-2011) was a French painter of Provence who built landscapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday life from thick colour laid on with knife and brush. She trained in the studio of Serge Mako and worked for three years with the poster artist Paul Colin.

Frame. Gilt molded frame with a twisted rope outer edge, beaded inner fillets and a broad flat gilt slip

Condition. Good condition. The raised paint is sound throughout, with small pinpoint pits in the blue passages and the orange band that belong to the thick paste itself. A short surface check follows a knot in the wood on the reverse, and the gilding of the frame is rubbed along its outer molding.

Signed Astoin lower right. 6 x 10 ¼ inches (15.5 x 26 cm), the frame 12 x 15 inches (30.5 x 38 cm). Molded gilt frame, in good condition.

Pink, rust and bottle green slabs are stacked across the middle of the panel. Each one rises to a near-white edge along its top, and above them the sky runs from turquoise on the left to violet on the right, laid more thinly than the masses beneath it. The paste is thick throughout. The ridges left by the tool run in short parallel lines across every mass. At the right edge a flat orange band ends in a small rounded upright, with a band of black laid under it against the blue, and the foreground is dragged across in blue, pink and pale yellow.

On the back the paper backing has been cut open over the bare wood. Small dried drops of white, pink and blue sit on the grain, the colors of the front, beside a handwritten label giving her name and the size.

Note

Astoin built her pictures from color alone. She set flat patches side by side with nothing drawn around them, and let depth come from one plane set behind the next, working a thick paste with both knife and brush in a wide gesture.

Condition report

Age shows on close inspection.
