André Chochon (1910-2005)

Listed artist

French painter born in Rennes, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Lucien Simon, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1933 and spending a year at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. His work is in the collections of the Centre Pompidou and the musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes.

Signed lower left Chochon, titled on the reverse. 21 x 18 inches (53.5 x 46 cm), the frame 30 x 26 inches (76 x 66 cm). Gilt frame with shell corners. Good condition, the gilding worn at the edges.

The gloves are the brightest thing in the painting, brighter than the face. She sits in profile on a high-backed chair with a red seat, her head turned to the left and her chin up, the pink parasol with its curved wooden handle laid across her lap.

A white feathered hat carries a cluster of pink and red flowers, and a white boa hangs from her shoulders over a pale blue dress. Everything behind her is blue, laid on in broad strokes that change direction around her head. The paint goes on full and round and is nowhere thin, and the gloves stand up off the canvas where the brush was loaded.
